 SPECIALIST TRAINING: WORKING WITH SURVIVORS OF INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE

Join us for a FREE TWO-DAY TRAINING COURSE on working with Survivors of Institutional Abuse.

WHO ARE THE TRAINING DAYS FOR?

This two-day training course is designed for front-line professionals working with Survivors of Institutional Abuse.

It is aimed at practitioners from a non-therapeutic background – advice workers, social workers, support workers, workers in housing associations and other non-clinical professionals including volunteers. Both days focus on providing information about sensitive practice and self-care when working with Survivors.

 DAY ONE

The training day will cover:

What is Institutional Abuse?

The background to Institutional Abuse

The effects of trauma

How to manage disclosures

How to look after yourself when working with Survivors of Institutional Abuse

 

DAY TWO

The training day will cover:

How does Institutional Abuse differ from other forms of abuse?

What constitutes sensitive practice when working with Survivors?

Shared experiences of professionals working with Survivors of Institutional Abuse

 

THE TRAINERS:

MARY HUGHES

Mary is qualified as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, a counsellor and a teacher, registered with UKCP.   Mary worked for 12 years as a psychotherapist at icap (Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy); icap is a leading voluntary organisation offering culturally sensitive psychotherapy and counselling to the Irish community, especially to Survivors of Institutional Abuse. Mary has been involved in psychotherapy, training and teaching for over

40 years and has worked in the NHS, the Voluntary Sector and in private practice; she has many years of experience in working with people from the black, ethnic minority and LGBT communities  in a variety of settings.

 

JEFF MOORE, DIRECTOR OF WELFARE, LONDON IRISH CENTRE

Jeff Moore is Jigsaw Programme Coordinator at Headstrong – The Irish National Centre for Youth Mental Health.  Jeff was previously Director of Welfare for the London Irish Centre where he managed the largest welfare service for Irish people outside of Ireland, including information and advice services for emigrant survivors of institutional abuse. Jeff’s recent research includes a needs analysis of the Irish community in London (2012) and an impact assessment of the benefit reforms on the Irish community in London (2013); he holds an MA in Community Development from Goldsmiths, (University of London) and is working towards a PhD in Resilience and Irish Survivors of Institutional Abuse.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

This is a two-day course and days cannot be booked separately.  Attendees must attend both days of the training. Any cancellations made within 5 days of the training will be charged a £25 cancellation fee.
